Your putter was individually handcrafted from either 1018 mild carbon steel or 303 stainless steel. If yours is 1018 carbon, it’s important to note that this material oxidizes and forms surface rust quickly when exposed to moisture or air.
To protect the finish and maintain its unique appearance, follow these care tips:
Maintenance Guidelines
• Always dry your putter thoroughly after each round and store it in a dry environment.
• Keep it in the headcover when not in use — and make sure the inside of the cover stays dry.
• After each use — or if you see signs of oxidation — wipe it down with an oil or silicone cloth.
Your putter will arrive with a light wipe-on oil coating for initial protection. Ongoing maintenance is simple — any light oil will work.
Brandon personally uses a basic motor oil rag, and it's effective.
Dialing In Your Finish
The beauty of a carbon putter is how it evolves over time. Once you understand how it reacts to your local conditions, you can develop a finish that’s truly your own:
Want that deep chocolate “Spieth-style” patina? Let it rust slightly, then rub it aggressively with your oil rag.
Prefer a warmer orange hue? Let it go a round or two without oiling before wiping it down.
With just a bit of care, your putter will age beautifully — developing a finish as unique as your game.
Caring for 303 Stainless Steel Putters
While 303 stainless steel is naturally resistant to water and corrosion, some finishes applied to it — especially the Antique finish — may require light maintenance to keep their distinct look.
Antique Finish
The Antique finish is created using a chemical compound that blackens the stainless steel. Afterward, it's hand-brushed to bring out a worn, aged look — similar in style to the Patina finish on carbon steel.
Because of the chemical treatment, the finish may appear to "rust" or discolor over time. This is not actual rust, but a natural surface reaction.
Keeping it sharp
• Light oxidation is normal and easily removed with a quick wipe of an oil or silicone rag.
• Regular wiping will refresh the blackened areas, keeping them bold and clean.
• If left untouched for extended periods, the finish may develop a dull, faded appearance — easily restored with a fresh oil wipe.
Caring for Matte Black Finish
The Matte Black finish on 303 stainless steel is a durable, heat cured coating — essentially a high-grade paint that encapsulates the entire head. This creates a waterproof barrier, causing most moisture to bead right off.
What to expect
Because this is a surface coating, it will naturally chip or wear over time, especially with regular play.
Tips to Extend the Life of the Finish
• Always use a headcover — especially when carrying multiple clubs — to prevent metal-to-metal contact that can lead to chipping.
• Keep the headcover free of sand or grit, which can scratch the finish.
• Know that with enough use, refinishing may eventually be needed — part of the life of a gamer.
